A bill that is advancing by Kentucky lawmakers could allow high school seniors to have a redo of their senior year and remain eligible for athletics programs, reported WLKY.
Senate Bill 129 was introduced by Senators Max Wise, Rick Girdler, and Danny Carroll. It would let public high school students request to use their 2021-22 school year as a supplemental school year. This means that the students could retake, and supplement, coursework that has already been completed.
The bill comes after last year's academic and athletic interruptions caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.
The state Senate passed the bill Tuesday, sending it to the state House.
The students would be approved or denied by local school boards. The bill would allow the students to participate in KHSAA activities during the supplemental school year if the students are approved.
Most students across the state have returned to some kind of in-person learning, however, Jefferson County Public Schools, which is the largest district in the state, only recently released plans to resume in-person schooling in mid-March.
The bill has been circulating since early February.
